Twin Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration - Suzy Quilts (2024)

Our fabric inspiration series continues with the first of our first bed-sized patterns. That's right — this post is all about twin quilt patterns! And to get you ready to quilt, we have over a dozen different mockups including lists of the actual fabric colors so you can get down to what you really want to do — making quilts.

Fabric is printed seasonally so once the new fabric season rolls around, it can be hard to find certain prints. If the fabric shown in the mockups (which are mostly solids that are continuously made) is still available, we have listed each fabric shown so that you can get your shopping list ready. Let's look at some beautiful twin quilt patterns!

The mockups are all brought to you by Sarah Holst of the shop Sarah Made, who has made kits for some of the mockups that will be available for a limited time, and from Suzy herself. Some of the mockups below by Suzy were previously only available in Suzy Quilts patterns and are being shown on our website for the first time!

The series will be five posts long and cover each common quilt size:

  • Baby Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
  • Throw Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
  • Twin Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
  • Queen Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration
  • King Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration

Note that fabric requirements for all of our patterns, including the quilt patterns included in this post, can be found on that pattern's page in our shop. Just scroll down and you'll see the fabric requirements as well as every blog post related to that pattern!

For the bed sized fabric inspiration posts, there are no quilt kits available. This is because it's uncommon to see twin, queen, or king quilt kits. But you can build your own kit by getting the fabrics listed above each quilt mockup. So get your shopping list ready!

How To Select Your Own Fabric Colors

If you're an adventurous quilter who is interested in creating your very own color mockups, we have some great suggestions!

  • Color Cards: Buying a color card from your favorite fabric manufacturer gives you a small swatch of each fabric so you can see the colors even more truly than they appear on a computer screen. You can use those swatches to select a quilt made entirely out of solids or even match up prints with coordinating solids. Plus don't miss ourfree tutorial for how to turn a color card into magnetsto make color selection even easier!
  • PreQuilt: Have you heard of this fantastic web-based app? PreQuilt uses colors from real fabric companies, including prints, so you can create your own mockups and see exactly how your will look when finished. We have exclusively partnered with PreQuilt and each pattern in our catalog is available as a digital coloring page, as are all of Suzy's print and solid fabric collection. Check out ourPreQuilt blog postfor video tutorials about how to make your own digital quilt mockups.
  • Coloring Pages: Speaking of coloring pages, each Suzy Quilts pattern comes with a blank coloring page that can be printed and colored in by hand. You can even download most of our coloring pages without buying the patterns inthis blog post!
  • Sew AlongBlog Posts: Did you know that the first week of every Suzy Quilts sew along focuses on selecting fabric for your quilt? Even if you've missed a sew along, you can still see all of the posts, including the Week 1 posts about fabric selection, by heading to theSew Alongsection of our website.
  • Local Quilt Shops: The staff of your local quilt shop would love to help you select fabrics for a quilt! Bring them an inspiration image or even just an idea, along with a picture of the pattern and the fabric requirements, and pretty soon you'll have your own quilt kit made with your new pals at the quilt shop

About Twin Quilt Patterns

Twin quilt patterns are wonderful because they are bed-sized quilts that are still easy to make because they are not significantly larger than a throw quilt.

And these quilts can be particularly special gifts. Do you know someone who is getting their first big kid bed? A throw quilt that coordinates with their bedroom colors or theme could be cherished and slept under for years. When my four year old got her big kid bed, she started sleeping with a Glitter & Glow quilt I made a couple of years ago that she calls her "Elsa quilt" because of the diamond shapes in different blue colors. Her love for something I handcrafted for her is just one of the many reasons I quilt.

Twin quilt patterns are also excellent gifts for high school graduates heading off to college. While the twin beds in dorms tend to be longer than standard twin beds, a quilt that fits the bed pretty well in their new school colors can be a source of great comfort when a teenager moves out of the house for the first time.

OurUltimate Guide to Quilt Sizes says that a standard twin quilt size is 70" x 90", but just like with our other fabric inspiration posts, you can play around with that size. For example, twin XL dorm mattresses are typically 5" longer than a standard twin bed. Consider adding borders to the top or bottom of a quilt for a graduating high school senior!

Now, let's start looking at mockups for twin quilt patterns! You'll see inspiration photos, digital mockups, and even some color comparisons of the same pattern so you can see how small changes can make a big difference in the finished quilt.

Fronds - Duval in Haze and Nova

Why we love it: Fronds is a great quilt to make for a bed because it does not get any more challenging the larger it gets — you still just make the same block repeated for the whole quilt! The finished product stuns in any fabrics, though we are always partial to Suzy Quilts fabrics.

Twin size: 72" x 96"

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are a mix of Suzy's Signature PURE Solids and Duval, both for Art Gallery Fabrics.

  • Color 1: Solid Pearl
  • Color 2: Boho Leaves Nova
  • Color 3: Boho Birds Snapdragon
  • Color 4: Solid Velvet
  • Color 5: Diamond Stripe Spiced
  • Color 6: Solid Shrimpy
  • Color 7: Boho Leaves Haze and Basket Weave Haze
  • Binding: Basket Weave Haze

Butterfly Garden - Evolve

Why we love it: Watch your fabric evolve into beautiful butterfly blocks with this whimsical quilt pattern! While this quilt is wonderful for kids, it is also perfect for any nature- or flower-loving grown up.

Twin size: 70" x 88"

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are a mix of Suzy's Signature PURE Solids and Evolve, both for Art Gallery Fabrics.

  • Wings: Evolve Key Lime, Solid Honeymoon, Solid Queen Bee, Coneflower Hemlock, Solid Nova, Boho Birds Glacier, Coneflower Cerulean, Diamond Stripe Honeymoon, Blocks Queen Bee, Meadow Queen Bee, Solid Honeymoon, Solid Dark Citron, Solid Cerulean, Boho Leaves Matcha
  • Four Patch: Solid Pearl
  • Background: Solid Pistachio
  • Binding: Evolve Key Lime

Starling - Marigolden Hour

Why we love it: Starling is a clever quilt pattern that creates illusions by reducing the number of points on the central square. For the twin quilt pattern, the central star has all of its points and the other four columns each lose one side of the star, making them look like they radiate out from the middle.

Twin size: 71" x 88"

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are a mix of Suzy's Signature PURE Solids and Art Gallery FabricsPURE Solids.

  • Colors: Sugar Plum, Marmalade, Cactus Flower, Mirage Blue, Shrimpy, Raw Gold, Summer Sun, Banana Cream, Honey, Queen Bee, Snapdragon, Haze, Verve Violet, Cerulean, Spiced, Poppy, Atmospheric, Cosmos
  • Background: Periwinkle
  • Binding: Haze

Starling — Fall Breeze

Why we love it: Now let's look at a version of Starling that is similar to the Marigolden Hour version above, but has some slight adjustments. By using a similar color palette in dustier colors and replacing the periwinkle background with a neutral one, the quilt has a completely different look that evokes a sunset in fall.

Twin size: 71" x 88"

Mockup by: Sarah Made

  • Colors: Flamingo, Mauvelous, Velvet, Swimming Pool, Ocean Fog, Honey, Dried Roses, Cinnamon, Periwinkle, Snapdragon, Shrimpy, Candied Cherry, Purple Wine, Bewitched, Aurus
  • Background: Pearl
  • Binding: Swimming Pool

Fireside — Duval and Evolve

Why we love it: Simple strips of fabric come together easily to create a quilt that harkens back to summers making s'mores beside a roaring fire. Perfect for summers spent camping, Fireside is just as beautiful on a bed in a house or a camper. Plus it looks great it prints and solids! In the version below, solids and prints are mixed which helps some rectangles pop.

Fireside — Boho Beaches

Why we love it: In the Boho Beaches version of Fireside, vibrant solids come together to create the look and feel of beach umbrellas or towels.

Twin size: 78" x 87"

  • Color 10: Bougainvillea

Why we love it: Glitter & Glow is a special quilt in the SQ catalog that can be made in two ways to give very different looks. Make a Glow version, like the one shown below, using yardage for a more minimal look. Glitter is the scrappy little sister of Glow and can be made in a variety of fun layouts. Checkout our instructions to make your own creamy version, which looks just as good on a bed!

Twin size: 70" x 90"

Holiday Party

Why we love it: Holiday Party is a great Christmas or winter quilt, but it also looks lovely in any color. Suzy even used Liberty of London florals for the Holiday Party sew along! The Holiday Party mockup below uses selections from all three of Suzy's current fabric collections and they look wonderful together.

Twin size: 77" x 97"

Mockup by: Sarah Made

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in the mockup below are a mix of Suzy's Signature PURE Solids collection and her DuvalandEvolve print collections for Art Gallery Fabrics. The twin sized Holiday Party quilt requires 20 fat quarters which are listed here as they are shown in pairs in each block below.

  • Blocks Nova and Nova Solid
  • Tiny Meadow Queen Bee and Queen Bee Solid
  • Tiny Meadow Nova and Glacier Solid
  • Boho Birds Glacier and and Ginger Solid

  • Basketweave Shrimpy and Spiced Solid
  • Basketweave Nova and Cerulean Solid
  • Basketweave Haze and Haze Solid

Modern Fans

Why we love it: This quilt pattern offers a gentle introduction to two quilting techniques that some people find intimidating — curves and improv piecing. By combining these two techniques into one pattern, your quilting confidence will grow with each block.

Twin size: 70" x 98"

Mockup by: Sarah Made

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics in this mockup are a mix of Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids and Suzy's Signature PURE Solids line, along with one print of your choice.

  • Color 1: Pacific
  • Color 2: Snow
  • Color 3: Sweet Fig
  • Color 4: Snap Dragon
  • Color 5: Find any green-on-green stripe print
  • Binding: Swimming Pool

Perennial

Why we love it: Envisioning a quilt as a garden and flowers all while learning improv cutting makes for one fun quilt. This is the perfect quilt to make in colors inspired by your own garden, or in colors inspired by a family or friend's garden!

Twin size: 74" x 93"

Mockup by: Sarah Made

Mockup fabrics: The fabrics used in this mockup are a mix of Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids and Suzy's Signature PURE Solids.

  • Flowers: Field of Lavender, Hydrangea
  • Garden: Desert Dunes, Crystal Pink, Dried Carrot, Tigerlily
  • Background: Pearl
  • Binding: Desert Dunes

Fly Away

Why we love it: Fly Away is a very fun quilt to experiment with a bold background. Many quilt patterns use neutral colors for the background and bright colors for the patchwork. Try switching that for Fly Away and using a vibrant background!

Twin size: 71" x 95"

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts

Mockup fabrics: The colors in this mockup are Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids.

  • Colors: Mystic Grey, White Linen, Blushing
  • Background: Lemon Tart
  • Binding: Mystic Grey

Minimal Triangles

Why we love it: This scrap-friendly quilt can be made in any configuration you'd like. If you're looking for a project to help tackle your scrap stash, you'll use a whopping 270 scraps to create a twin version!

Twin size: 70" x 89"

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts

Mockup fabrics: The colors in this mockup are Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids.

  • Colors: Snow, Parisian Blue, Lemon Tart
  • Background: Mediterraneo
  • Inner Border: Atmospheric
  • Outer Border: Parisian Blue
  • Binding: Lemon Tart

Reflections

Why we love it: Reflections is a lovely quilt as a square, which it is for the baby and throw size. But the larger bed sized quilts, like the twin version, have an added dimension with the upper and lower borders.

Twin size: 70" x 90"

Mockup by: Suzy Quilts

Mockup fabrics: The colors in this mockup are Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids.

  • Color 1: White Linen
  • Color 2: Apricot Crepe
  • Color 3: Peach Sherbet
  • Color 4: Amethyst
  • Binding: Peach Sherbet

Shine

Why we love it: Shine is another pattern that introduces quilters to improv cutting and piecing. The results are a unique quilt that truly looks unlike any other quilt. The mockup below uses 16 colors instead of the30 colors used in the twin version in the pattern. Instead of buying fat quarters, purchase 16 half yards and use repeat each block four times instead of two. Or if you like these colors, you can experiment and add your own twist by using the full 30 and adding blocks of your own!

Twin size: 76" x 89"

Mockup by: Sarah Made

Mockup fabrics: The mockup below is a mix of Art Gallery PURE Solids and Suzy's Signature PURE Solids. The colors are listed below in the way they are paired in the mockup.

  • Snapdragon and Poppy
  • Sweet Mint and Aero Blue
  • Dried Carrot and Amethyst
  • Cerulean and Parisian Blue
  • Empire Yellow and Fresh Water
  • Georgia Peach and Verve Violet
  • Blushing and Golden Bronze
  • Crystalline and Warm Wave
  • Background: Deep Black
  • Binding: Parisian Blue

Triangle Jitters

Why we love it: This classic pattern is one of the most popular in the SQ catalog for a good reason — Triangle Jitters is an easily adjustable pattern made entirely using half square triangles! This is a great pattern for a twin bed since twin mattresses can vary in size.

Twin size: 72" x 104"

Mockup by: Sarah Made

Mockup fabrics: The colors in the mockup below are a mix of Art Gallery PURE Solids and Suzy's Signature PURE Solids.

  • Color 1: Verve Violet
  • Color 2: Golden Bronze
  • Color 3: Desert
  • Background: Pearl
