Biblical Studies is a required survey course of both the Old Testament/Hebrew Bibleand the New Testament. The goal of this course is twofold: first, that students leave the course biblically literate and, second, that students work towards becoming charitable interpreters of religious texts. We will work towards the first goal of biblical literacy by studying the major characters, events, and theological themes of both Testaments. Students will work towards seeing how the entirety of the Bible fits together as one unified story, where every part, no matter how obscure, has some sort of relation with all of the others. We will work towards the second goal of becoming charitable interpreters by placing the Bible in dialogue with current cultural, moral, and political questions. Students will strive throughout the course to articulate their own beliefs more clearly and to engage with perspectives that differ from their own in a charitable but critical manner. Student work will include major projects, socratic seminars, interview assignments, plentiful at-home reading, and a final exam.A new addition to the Biblical Studies course this summer will be an introductory period of online coursework comprising approximately 8 hours. This work will become available on Monday, July 8, and must be completed before class starts on campus. The final exam is expected to be taken in-person on the final day of class.

Attendance Policy:Up to 2 absences due to legitimate circ*mstances may be made up during the weekday afternoons between July 15 - July 26th. However, due to the limited time of the course, multiple absences may lead to a student not receiving credit for the course.

Instructor: Chelsea Brewer, CCES Middle School Teacher

Rube Goldberg is a famous inventor and cartoonist known for making simple tasks ridiculously complex. A Rube Goldberg Machine “is an overly complex contraption, designed with humor and a narrative, to accomplish a simple task.” The machine typically involves a chain reaction of events to produce the final simple step. Campers will enjoy the challenge of turning a simple task, like flipping on a light switch, into an incredible maze of reactions to finally end with task completion. Campers will choose any task and then create a silly, complex system to complete the task. Assorted items from home may be needed, but most materials can be found within our huge supply.
