Summary[]
Twenty years after the massacre at Camp Arawak, a new string of murders erupts at Camp Manabe. Centered around a young, autistic teenage boy with learning disabilities named Alan, the killing spree slowly builds up, leaving campers and counselors to wonder if the infamous Angela Baker has returned.
Full Synopsis[]
In 2003, during a summer night in upstate New York, a group of boys at Camp Manabe take a cigarette lighter from a timid and bespectacled boy nicknamed "Pee Pee" due to his bedwetting habit. Eddie, Mark, and Billy use the lighter to ignite their flatulence, while Pee Pee watches nervously.
Suddenly, Alan, a misunderstood social outcast, appears from the nearby bathroom and sees the boys giggling. He threatens them with assault, thinking they were gossiping about him. However, when he learns what they are really doing, Alan becomes interested in trying it himself and takes the lighter. Pee Pee tells Alan not to break it because it belongs to his father, but Alan mocks him for being a bedwetter.
Alan attempts to light his flatulence, but he accidentally soils his underwear, leading the boys to make fun of him. In retaliation, Alan uses the lighter to create a flamethrower by igniting hair spray. He aims fire at the boys' faces until their counselor Randy enters the cabin and intervenes. Randy tries to overpower Alan, but Alan breaks free, shoves him, insults him with his catchphrase "Your ass stinks!", and escapes from the cabin.
The next day at supper, the greedy, shady, and ineffective camp owner, Frank Kostik, introduces the campers to Sheriff Jerry, who is also an anti-smoking speaker. The sheriff has to use a medical device about the size of a small electric razor to produce more direct speech due to losing his voice box to cancer of the larynx. He attempts to educate the minors on the dangers of smoking tobacco. He is mocked by the teens, however, and opts to end the speech, despite Frank’s support.
Alan flicks mashed potatoes at Pee-Pee's face and argues with Randy about the poor quality of the camp food. Despite his job working with minors, Randy shows no concern for Alan's feelings and angrily tells him to eat his chicken dinner. When Alan refuses, Randy grabs him by the head and almost forces his face into the food.
Feeling threatened and disrespected, Alan throws his plate on the floor. Randy becomes physically abusive with him until Alan shoves him away. Ronnie Angelo, the senior counselor and part-owner of the camp, intervenes. He chastises Randy for mistreating a 14-year-old. Randy claims that Alan was throwing food at the other kids and refused to eat his dinner. Ronnie reminds Alan that they had previously discussed his behavior, and Alan agreed to make an effort to improve. However, Alan says everyone is picking on him, causing him to react out of fear and frustration. Ronnie sympathizes with how Alan is treated by others and defends him. He knows that Alan has emotional issues but deals with the situation calmly by reasoning with him to be more friendly, patient, and cooperative with others.
Ronnie permits Alan to enter the kitchen and choose something he would like to eat, and he offers ice cream for dessert. On the way, Randy insults Alan's manhood, despite Alan being only 14 years old. Alan is unfazed by Randy's childish behavior however and smirks at him, responding with his catchphrase, "Your ass stinks!"
Still feeling the adrenaline from his confrontation with Randy, Alan pulls the ponytail of a shy, meek female camper. Then a loudmouthed camper named Bella punches Alan in the stomach when he isn't looking. Alan falls to the ground, and Bella high-fives her friends. However, Alan gets revenge by taking Bella's food plate and dumping it on her lap. Bella stands up to confront him but is stopped, and Alan is unafraid of her.
The camp is understaffed, and the few staff members present are just as immature as some of the teenagers. When Alan accidentally bumps into a rude camp server, the server insults Alan's weight and he sarcastically apologizes to her.
Upon entering the kitchen, Alan is welcomed by Charlie, the head chef of the camp. Charlie sarcastically refers to him as the "camp problem child," but in a friendly manner. When Alan politely asks for something to eat, Charlie informs him that he has finished for the day and leaves him in the care of Mickey, an immature, ill-tempered, and lazy assistant cook.
Alan requests the ice cream promised to him by Ronnie from Mickey, who rudely denies him and offers him the choice of an egg salad sandwich or a tuna salad sandwich, both of which Alan finds unappealing. Mickey does not give him the promised ice cream. However, when Mickey's back is turned, Alan, being only 14, takes an ice cream sandwich from the freezer. Mickey catches Alan in the act and snatches the ice cream from him while insulting him.
Mickey throws an egg at Alan, who retaliates by throwing a pan at him but misses. As Mickey taunts Alan for his poor aim, he pelts him with another egg. At that moment, Petey, a kind counselor, walks in to collect more orange juice for a young camper and witnesses the altercation. In a fit of rage, Alan throws a butcher knife at Mickey, narrowly missing him by a few inches to his right and leaving the cook shaken. The noise draws the attention of the campers and staff.
Frank, Ronnie, and the sheriff burst into the kitchen just as Alan throws the knife. Frank scolds the enraged boy, and Alan flees the scene. Frank orders Michael, Alan's step-brother, to retrieve him. Michael is ruthless, cruel, aggressive, and a bully.
Michael locates Alan at a secluded spot in the woods, which the latter frequents. Alan claims that the frogs in the area are his friends and do not mind that he was once sick, alluding to the possibility of a permanent brain injury resulting from rheumatic fever. When Michael kicks one of the frogs and attempts to bring Alan back to camp, Alan vehemently refuses and threatens his step-brother with a knife. Michael gives up and returns to camp by himself.
Later that evening, Mickey prepares his supper alone in the kitchen. He walks over to the grill and flips his burgers before emptying a batch of cooked french fries from the deep fryer. Without bothering to turn it off, Mickey then proceeds to clean the fryer.
A figure dressed in black suddenly bursts into the kitchen and grabs Mickey's legs from behind, causing him to cling onto the edges of the fryer. The assailant then grabs a chair and positions it beside the fryer, suspending Mickey upside down above the hot oil. Mickey loses his balance and accidentally dips his thumb in the scalding oil, allowing the killer to push his head into the fryer. He writhes in agony for a brief moment before his brain succumbs to the intense heat, resulting in his death. The murderer kicks the chair away, causing Mickey's lifeless body to fall backward onto the floor, with his bald, blistered, and red head facing upwards. The killer stuffs the body into a plastic bag and throws it into the dumpster before activating the garbage compactor, effectively obliterating the corpse.
Ronnie and Charlie express their dissatisfaction with Mickey to Frank, who advises them to terminate his employment if he returns. Despite Ronnie's insistence that they address the rat infestation, Frank appears more concerned with his beloved bird, Matilda, and pays little attention to Ronnie's requests.
Later that night, Alan returns to the camp and steals Pee Pee's chocolate bar at the social. Meanwhile, in the popular kid's section, Karen, a beautiful, shy, and popular 17-year-old girl, is chatting with Bella and their friends. When Bella sees Alan, she smiles at him and invites him to join them, knowing that he has a crush on Karen. As a prank, Bella and the other campers purposely ditch Karen when Alan comes over to talk to her. Karen is visibly repulsed by Alan's odor and learns that they both dislike Mickey. She confides in Alan that Mickey made inappropriate advances towards her when she was working in the kitchen, but Alan assures her that he would have protected her if he had been there.
T.C., a popular bully, joins Karen and Alan, along with Bella who laughs at T.C. as Alan knocks him down for giving him a nipple twist. Karen also joins in on the laughter. However, Bella is seeking revenge on Alan for humiliating her during dinner, even though she had assaulted him first. She cowardly grabs Alan's testicles, leading to an argument between the two. Eventually, Frank intervenes and sends Alan back to his cabin, but not before Alan delivers his catchphrase, "Your ass stinks!"
As Alan is leaving, he runs into campers Weed and Stan, who trick him into smoking dried cow manure, pretending it's marijuana. Trying to fit in and not wishing to offend the boys, Alan pretends to get high, but ends up coughing and falling to his knees, where he hugs Stan. T.C. enters and makes a homophobic comment, calling Alan "Blowjob" because it looks like he's performing oral sex on Stan. Counselor Petey intervenes and takes Alan away, threatening to tell Ronnie about the boys smoking marijuana. While the boys think Alan has left, he returns quietly, informs them of him being there and gives them the middle finger. 🖕🏻
Weed and Stan spend the night smoking pot with two girls by the lake. While Stan and the girls go inside, Weed falls asleep. A person dressed in black ties Weed to his chair, pours gasoline down his throat, and ignites him after gagging him with a "Drugs Are For Dummies" sticker. Weed's friend Stan disappears after the incident and is never seen again.
The next day, Frank and Ronnie meet with Sheriff Jerry to discuss Weed's death. Frank believes it was an accident, but Ronnie suspects it may be connected to the Camp Arawak murders that happened two decades ago. Frank doesn't want bad publicity, so he dismisses Ronnie's concerns. However, the sheriff decides to investigate further.
Sheriff Jerry goes to a nearby quarry where Ricky Thomas, Angela Baker's cousin, works. Ricky tells him that Angela cannot be the killer because she's currently in a psychiatric hospital. Despite this, the sheriff intends to continue his investigation.
Meanwhile, the campers are engaging in their usual activities. A group of girls is playing croquet, but Bella openly expresses her displeasure with the game. Alan interrupts their game and demands a date with Karen, which annoys Bella. She threatens to attack him with her mallet if he doesn't leave, but he refuses to unless Karen agrees to go on a date with him. When Alan insults Bella by calling her a man, she tries to hit him with a croquet ball, but Alan mocks her poor aim. Eventually, Karen agrees to go on a date with Alan later in the day after he ruins their croquet game.
Later on, Alan moons a large group of female campers. He then tries to join in a game of paintball with the boys, but they trick him into thinking it's a friendly game only to gang up on him and shoot him with paintballs in a cowardly manner. Michael and the rest of the guys take part in this cruel joke.
Karen is hesitant to meet Alan alone and brings her friend Marie along. The three of them meet in the woods where Alan has set up a safe space. Alan offers them soda, but their date takes a bad turn when they come across several dead and skinned frogs. Karen and Marie suspect Alan of being responsible for the gruesome scene, and they quickly seek refuge with counselor Linda at the lake dock.
Meanwhile, Alan discovers that Michael and his friend are behind the killing of the innocent frogs. He is appalled by their cruel behavior and cannot comprehend why someone would harm defenseless animals. Michael responds by saying that they find torturing and killing animals to be "cool." He then insults Alan, who is a special needs student, for not understanding their twisted sense of humor.
Alan catches up with Karen at the dock where Linda is present, but T.C. and his group stop him. Randy is also with them, but he fails to act professionally or diffuse the situation. Linda insults Alan, and he responds by insulting her back, which only fuels Randy's immaturity. Despite being an adult, Randy urges T.C. to give Alan a wedgie in front of everyone at the waterfront. The other counselors watch and laugh, showing their childish, sadistic, and lazy tendencies. Alan falls into the lake and nearly drowns, but Petey jumps in to save him just as Ronnie arrives on the scene.
Despite the traumatic experience, Alan decides to attend the social that night. However, he still feels bitter, hurt, humiliated, and angry. In a fit of rage, he pulls the ponytail of the same female camper he had previously assaulted in the cafeteria.
Bella sits with her friends and shoots spitballs at Alan, who confronts her. In retaliation, Alan splashes soda on Bella's clothes. Before Bella can react, Frank arrives and berates Alan over his parrot, Matilda, who has learned and repeatedly says Alan's catchphrase, "Your ass stinks!" Frank accuses Alan of teaching the phrase to the bird, but Alan denies it and insults the parrot. Frank kicks Alan out of the social in anger, and Alan says his catchphrase to him before leaving.
Later, Michael, T.C., and Marie pressure Karen into joining them in pranking Alan. When Alan runs outside after the confrontation with Frank, Karen invites him backstage to play a game. Once there, Michael, T.C., and their friends ambush Alan in the dark and strip off his clothes.
His arms are bound, his eyes covered, and he is pushed onto a stage in front of the entire camp wearing only his underwear. The kids laugh at him until Petey rushes in to help. Karen looks guilty as Alan manages to escape. Ronnie is outraged by the prank and orders Randy to investigate. However, Randy complains that it's his night off. Petey clothes Alan and takes him to Ronnie's cabin, where Alan falls asleep.
Becoming increasingly paranoid, Ronnie accuses Petey of being the killer because she always appears to rescue Alan. He confronts her in a rage, but Sheriff Jerry and Frank arrive and order Petey to return to her cabin, which she does. The entire camp taunts Alan outside the cabin with chants of "Blowjob." Alan is awakened by the commotion. Frank does not intervene and even slaps Alan for becoming upset, instructing him to remain calm. Alan shoves Frank aside, goes outside, and curses out the campers.
Driven to madness, he escapes into the woods. Eventually, Frank steps in and restores order. Ronnie punishes T.C. by confining him to his cabin for a week, and searches for Alan while Frank imposes a grounding on the remaining campers.
After returning to his office, Frank is knocked unconscious with a hammer and wakes up with his head stuck in his birdcage. The killer opens the birdcage and places two angry rats inside and locks it. The rats eat through Frank's head and exit via his intestines.
Randy and Linda go to the pump house to attempt to have sex. Before that, however, Randy is seen urinating in the woods, and Linda goes to the back of her Jeep to get something. The killer ties Randy to a tree and wraps a fishing line noose around his penis. Randy, thinking it’s Alan who’s doing this to him, begins to yell at him to let him go. When Linda hears Randy, she becomes frightened. She drives away, unaware that the fishing line is tied to the vehicle. She runs into a pothole and gets the jeep stuck. She tries to get it out, which pulls hard on Randy’s penis. She attempts to get out of the pothole, but with no success, much to Randy’s relief, for every attempt left the wire tugging and pulling on his penis. Eventually, Linda notices the 4-wheel-drive function and uses it to escape the pothole. The fishing line tied to Randy’s penis grows tight as she drives away and gives one final mighty pull to Randy’s penis before ripping it off. Randy eventually bleeds to death. Linda screams that she would be next to die without noticing a barbed wire missing from the shed they were parked at. Linda drives through the string of barbed wire placed on the road, crashing the vehicle and wrapping her face in the dangerous material. Linda eventually saw the barbed wire hanging across the street, but it was too late, and she couldn't stop. The barbed wire gets entangled around her throat and head, and she crashes into a tree. She stays alive for a long time but finally bleeds to death in the jeep after Karen runs off in terror upon finding her.
Ronnie returns from searching for Alan and checks on T.C every 15 minutes to make sure he’s still in his cabin. When the other boys invite T.C. to join them on a panty raid in the girls' cabin, they are all stopped by Ronnie waiting outside, who orders T.C. back inside. T.C. looks at a dirty magazine alone in his cabin. Suddenly, a wooden spear pops up through a hole in the floor and pokes a hole through the magazine, startling him. As Spaz enters the cabin from a panty raid to inform T.C. of what he missed out on, T.C. tries to explain to his friend what he just witnessed. Spaz looks through the hole and spots the spear lying on the floor below, shrugging it off soon afterward. T.C. is more serious about the matter as the object is as sharp as a spike. Spaz looks through the hole a second time and admits that it is too dark for him to see anything down there. Amazed at his friend's apparent stupidity, T.C. tells him that he can see it perfectly and peers into the hole to prove it. Without warning, the spear gouges his right eye out. In a panic, T.C. stumbles around, screaming in pain with the spear still wedged in his socket until he walks into a wall and forces the stick right through his head. T.C. shakes from the trauma and then drops dead. Then Spaz screams in horror like a little girl screaming in pain. He is not seen again.
As Bella walks to her cabin, she sees someone has tampered with her private stash of candies. Fixing her “store”, she then lays on her bed to read a comic book; the killer has tied one end of a small wire to a blanket hanging below a camper named Marie's bunk and waits quietly somewhere, holding the other end. She pulls the wire, causing the blanket hanging below Marie's bunk to fall on Bella, who angrily removes the cover. Upon noticing a board of sharp nails above her, she exclaims a quick "What the fuck?" The killer then jumps onto Marie's bed, causing it and the board of nails to fall on the victim. Bella suddenly felt Marie's bunk cave in on her and gasped while trying in vain to shield herself, but the bunk crushed and impaled Bella, killing her. Karen and Marie would later find Bella's body, complete with a pool of blood on the floor surrounding her stash of candies, finally prompting Karen to believe that Alan is responsible and that she’s next. Hence, she screams that Alan is going to kill her, and she flees into the woods.
Ronnie and a counselor named Jenny find Frank's body in his office and realize there is a murderer on the loose. T.C.'s corpse is also located, sending the kids and teens into a chaotic frenzy. Ronnie and Jenny round up the counselors to protect their campers. Sheriff Jerry arrives, as well as Ricky Thomas, claiming the sheriff called him, but Jerry denies it. Michael learns about the killings and runs from the counselors to find Karen.
Karen stumbles into the killer in the woods and faints. She wakes up at the Rec. Hall with a rope hanging from a basketball hoop tied around her neck. Karen begs Alan for mercy. The killer flips a switch to raise the net, causing Karen to lift off the ground. Michael comes in before Karen hangs to death. The Sheriff arrives and lowers the yield. Michael is enraged, grabs a mallet, and vows to take care of Alan once and for all.
Michael finds Alan in the woods with frogs. Alan begs him for his help, but Michael assaults him with the mallet until someone off camera stops him.
Ronnie, Ricky, and Jenny later find the badly wounded Alan alone.
As Ronnie gets tries to get information from Alan, Sheriff Jerry comes up behind Ronnie and Ricky, explaining that he's been waiting a long time for this. They discover Michael nearby: he's been skinned alive and murdered for what all that he did to Alan and his frogs. Jenny flees in fright.
Jerry removes his hat, sunglasses, and stage make-up, revealing himself as the escaped Angela Baker.
Alan smiles, gives the middle finger to the counselors and says his catchphrase, “Your ass stinks!”
Angela laughs maniacally until she stops and looks at the camera with a vicious blank expression before the screen blacks out.
A flashback shows Angela weeks earlier after escaping the mental institute. She fakes car problems and flags down Sheriff Pete. She acts frantically and tricks him into looking under the car, enabling her to drop the vehicle down on his head, explaining how she became the movie's hero.

Mystery[]
Returning to the themes of the original, this film also included the whodunit? aspect of the first film. The killer is seen wearing all black, his or her identity obscured from the viewer. The audience is presented with the mystery of who the killer could be. Candidates include the long locked-up Angela Baker, her conveniently close cousin Ricky, the kind counselor Petey or the misunderstood teenager, Alan.
Theories[]
This film adds fire to some fan theories. Those who believe Ricky assisted in the original killing cite that he defends Angela and says that he visited her shortly before the "Sheriff" visits. The timeline is tight, but she may have escaped after that and had enough time to make it to Camp Manabe and killed Mickey.
Some fans have also speculated that there are two Angelas. They believe Felissa Rose's Angela and Pamela Springsteen's Angela to be different characters. Because this film ignores the first two sequels, and dialogue suggests that Felissa Rose's Angela has been locked up for twenty years, this may be the case, but it is still ambiguous.
Remake Aspect[]
Return to Sleepaway Camp is part remake, filmed when horror remakes were the craze. Many characters are analogues to original Sleepaway Camp characters by being similar or opposite.
- Protagonist Alan is the polar opposite of the original Angela. She is a shy girl, while he tries to be social. In both films, those who bully them are murdered.
- Michael is related to the protagonist but bullies him, whereas Ricky was related to his protagonist, but protected her. Both had anger management issues.
- Frank and Mel Kostic are similar camp owners, seeming to care more about making a buck than protecting their charges.
- In both films, Ronnie, the head counselor, acts as a moral compass.
- There are mean counselors (Meg and Linda) and kind counselors who protect the protagonist (Susie and Petey).
- In both films a nasty chef (Artie and Mickey) are killed after bothering the protagonist, and a second, black-American chef (Ben and Charlie) are played by well known actors, (Robert Earl Jones and Isaac Hayes) are friendly and disappear half way through the film.
- In both films the protagonist is bothered by a rude camper of his or her own gender (Judy and T.C.) and have feelings for a kind-hearted fellow camper (Paul and Karen).
- Mel nearly beats Ricky to death after Meg was killed; Michael nearly beats Alan to death with a mallet when Karen was almost killed. Both Mel and Michael also call the protagonist a liar.
- Both films feature a police officer with fake facial hair.
For further similarities, see Remake Connections.
Sequel[]
Robert Hiltzik announced plans for this to be the second part of his Sleepaway Camp trilogy. The next film would be Sleepaway Camp: Reunion, and see the highly anticipated return of Aunt Martha, a character referenced in each sequel but not seen since the original. However, due to this film being a financial failure that received horrible reviews, as well as the death of Desiree Gould, the sequel was never made.
Body Count[]
Trivia[]
- There may be a timeline problem. The night of the finale appears to be the same day as Alan showing Karen his frogs and getting a wedgie because nearly every character seems to be wearing the same clothes. In between this, however, Sheriff Jerry talks to Ricky. When Ricky reappears at the end, it is mentioned that they haven't seen each other since “last week.” The night of the finale must take place several days later, and everyone happens to be dressed the same way as before, proving that Alan wasn’t the only slob.
- Scripts were circulated with fake endings to avoid leaking spoilers.
- The line Alan yells to a group of campers, “I hope you all die” was said before by Danny Devito as Louie De Palma in the television show, “Taxi,” season two, episode 8, titled “The Great Race.”
- There was terrible luck during the making of this film. Director Robert Hiltzik said in an interview that there were a lot of natural disasters during filming such as rain, thunder, and hail. There was even snow, despite it being summer time when this film was shot. The crew also lost electricity several times.
