Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (2024)

Old School RuneScape (OSRS) has many skills, these help you progress your characters, gain more gold, and break the cycle of combat. Unfortunately, for some of these, the grind is a lengthy process that feels repetitive. However, it’s amidst the act of training these skills where you can find a welcome addition to OSRS - Skilling Pets.

These pets are not only aesthetically pleasing, but act as a showcase of time spent in and dedication to the game. While some players may be lucky to obtain one early if they’ve been blessed by the RNG Gods, the chance of a pet drop is not stacked in your favour, as it will often take hundreds of hours to see that ‘funny feeling you’re being followed’ message.

The odds listed below do not mean you can’t get one on your very first action. Instead, they are the base chance estimates each in-game action has of dropping that specific pet.

10 Baby Chinchompa

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (1)

Baby Chinchompa is one of two potential pets to be gained when training the Hunter skill and can only be obtained while catching any kind of Chinchompa. Players can transform their pet into four colors: Grey, Red, Black, or, with a one in 10,000 chance, into a Gold Chinchompa.

The chances of obtaining one is based on your Hunter level. Should you have 99 Hunter your chances are as follows:

  • 1 in 128,920 - Grey Chinchompa.
  • 1 in 95,898 - Red Chinchompa.
  • 1 in 80,283 - Black Chinchompa.

9 Beaver

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (2)

The Beaver pet is gained from the Woodcutting skill when chopping any type of tree. This excludes trees found inside mini-games and special areas such as Tutorial Island, Miscellania and Etceteria. With the addition of Forestry, players can now re-colour their Beaver by first using a Funky Shaped Log on their pet, purchasable from the Forestry Shop. Players must then use any of the standard logs from Regular through to Redwood to access the ten different Beaver skins on offer.

Your best chance at obtaining the Beaver pet is by two-ticking Teak trees, as this accumulates the most amount of logs per time spent. However, this is a tedious and click-intensive task, instead, you are better off chopping Arctic Pine trees for a base chance of 1 in 145,758.

8 Abyssal Protector

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (3)

The Abyssal Protector is a smaller version of the Abyssal Guardian, commonly found in The Abyss, with the mouth showcasing a frown instead of a smile. What makes the Abyssal Protector so unique, though, is the purple star and yellow square on its body, which is a reference to the popular cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.

The Abyssal Protector is one of two pets you can get by training the RuneCrafting skill. It's a 1 in 4,000 chance reward from the Rewards Guardian after participating in and spending your points from the Guardian’s of the Rift, a mini-game where players must craft runes and imbue essence to power up the Rift Guardian and subdue Abyssal Creatures.

7 Rock Golem

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (4)

The Rock Golem can be obtained while training the mining skill. The pet can alternate between 16 different variations, by using resources that can be mined throughout the world of Gielinor, except Blasted and Lunar ore.

RELATED: Old School RuneScape: 1-99 Mining Guide

The fastest way to obtain the Rock Golem is by mining gems underground in Shilo Village, this gives a base chance of 1 in 211,886. However, should you wish to AFK while mining, the Motherlode Mine could be the answer you’re looking for.

To obtain all the unlockables from the Motherlode Mine, this will cost 580 Golden Nuggets, which takes cleaning 23,481 paydirt on average. This means if you were to unlock everything the mine has to offer, by the end, you would have a 1 in 11 chance of receiving the pet.

6 Heron

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (5)

The Heron can be obtained while training the Fishing skill. It only has one other form, and you must feed it 3000 Spirit Flakes. Upon doing so it will turn it into a Great Blue Heron. This is reversible by feeding it any raw fish that you have available.

The fastest way to obtain the Heron pet is by two-ticking Tuna and Swordfish. However, if that isn’t for you, the best alternative method is by catching Karabwans at a 1 in 170,874 base chance. If you prefer mini-games, at the Fishing Trawler you can obtain the Heron at a 1 in 5,000 chance when you complete a successful trip, scaling up to one in 2,500 with full contribution.

5 Tangleroot

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (6)

Tangleroot is a pet that can be gained as you train the Farming skill. It can change between six different forms by feeding it either an Acorn, Crystal Acorn, Dragonfruit seed, Guam seed, Redwood seed or a White Lily seed.

The chance for this pet to drop is limited to when you check the health of a tree you have planted, or when you harvest the last crop in your yield. You can also receive the pet from the Tithe Farm mini-game, however, the odds are very rare; equivalent to 25,000 hours of playtime.

The fastest way to receive Tangleroot is to do your daily farming runs, making sure you also plant cacti and belladonna on your trips, as well as slaying Hespori, who has a 1 in 5,375 chance of dropping the pet.

4 Rift Guardian

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (7)

The Rift Guardian is obtained through the Runecrafting skill and has 16 changeable variations, symbolising the various different runes and their colours within Gielinor. Players may also use a Guardian’s Eye on the Rift Guardian, transforming their pet into the Greatish Guardian, which is a mini replica of the Guardian in the Guardians of the Rift mini-game.

RELATED: Old School RuneScape: 1-99 Runecrafting Guide

It should be noted that crafting runes via the Guardians of the Rift mini-game will not reward you with the Rift Guardian pet. Should you wish to attempt to go for the pet, the recommended method is to craft lava runes. You can do this from level 23 Runecrafting and doing it all the way to level 99 will net you just shy of a 50:50 chance of obtaining the pet.

3 Herbi

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (8)

Herbi is pet that's rewarded while hunting Herbiboars on Fossil Island and cannot be gained any other way. It takes inspiration from Disney character, Pumbaa, from The Lion King. Should you ever use a Butterfly In A Jar, with Herbi following you, an interaction will happen where Herbi will eat the butterfly.

Once you’ve hunted a Herbiboar and harvested its herbs, you have a o1 in 6,500 chance to receive it as a drop. From level 80 Hunter, which is the level you need to start hunting Herbiboars, it will take 4,531 successful hunts to reach level 99 hunter, giving you around a 70 percent chance of receiving it.

2 Rocky

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (9)

Rocky is a pet that can be obtained while training the Thieving skill. Rocky symbolises a raccoon and has three different forms: the original, Red and an alter-ego form named Ziggy. Rocky gets his name from The Beatles song, Rocky Racoon, and is the only pet that is gay, as his dialogue states that he wants to steal the heart of a raccoon named Rodney.

The fastest way to obtain Rocky is from stealing from the Draynor Village stalls west of the Draynor Bank. Stealing from the wine stall there will grant you a base chance of 1 in 35,240 of obtaining Rocky. Alternatively, you can do Pyramid Plunder and steal from the centre chest in every room, which will grant you a 1 in 1644 chance. However, it has a high requirement of 91 Thieving.

1 Giant Squirrel

Old School RuneScape: Best Skilling Pets (10)

The Giant Squirrel is obtained by training the Agility skill and its appearance is based on the Indian giant squirrel. The pet has a chance to be given once a player has completed an entire lap of any Agility Course, or from tagging a ticket dispenser in the Brimhaven Agility Arena.

The fastest way to obtain the Giant Squirrel is by doing the Penguin Agility Course, this will give you a base chance of 1 in 9779 and can be completed with the low requirement of 30 Agility. Alternatively, if you were to run the Hallowed Sepulchre, each floor has a different chance to reward the pet once completed. Starting at Floor One, giving you a 1 in 35,000 chance, to Floor Five, which is a 1 in 2,000 chance. However, the Fifth Floor requires an exceptionally high Agility level of 92.
