ADULT LITERACY COUNCIL

Special skills or training: None. We provide training when needed. No experience necessary. Requirements include a willingness to help others and usually a commitment of up to two hours a week.

ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE COUNCIL FOR THE CONCHO VALLEY (ADACCV)

Organization’s purpose: To save lives and create healthier communities. ADACCV provides residential and outpatient treatment for adult men and women.

When needed: Volunteer opportunities vary and many can be tailored to the volunteer'sneeds. Volunteer opportunities range from assisting with fundraisers, painting or performing minor repairs on the treatment houses, to light office work and organization.

BUILDING BRIDGES

Organization’s purpose: Building Bridges is Hospice of San Angelo’s grief support program for children, grades K-12, who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives. Volunteers do everything from baking cookies to facilitating groups. Our peer support groups, along with our established curriculum, are designed to help with the expression of grief feelings, provide support and encouragement, and allow for meaningful commemoration for children who have experienced loss.

When needed: 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays for six weeks in a row (two six-week sessions per year).

Who is eligible: All volunteers must complete a volunteer applicationand pass a background check.

Age requirements: 18 and older; must be out of high school.

Special skills or training: A heart for working with children and compassion for those grieving the loss of a loved one. Our two-day volunteer training must be completed before volunteers can work with the children in our program.

CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER OF TOM GREEN COUNTY — CASA PROGRAM

Organization’s purpose: To ensure every child in our community has a safe and nurturing home. The purpose of the CASA program is to speak for the best interest of abused or neglected children whose home will be determined by a court of law. CASA volunteers stand beside the child throughout their journey to provide hope and to help guide the child to a safe and permanent home.

Organization’s purpose: Our three main missions are Emergency Services, Cadet Programs and Aerospace Education

Organization’s purpose: Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force, which consists of regular Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, along with Air Force retired military and civilian employees. CAP, in its Total Force role, operates a fleet of 550 aircraft and performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 78 lives annually. Civil Air Patrol’s 56,000 members nationwide also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug-interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Its members additionally play a leading role in aerospace education, and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program. Who is eligible: Members are provided extensive training and education in more than 20 fields. Whatever your skill or talent, there's a place for you in CAP. Senior membership is open to ages 18 andolder. Cadet membership is open to ages12-18. A cadet can remain in the program until age 21.

Organization’s purpose: To serve as advocates for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Volunteers will visit with residents at their assigned facility, address concernsand protect residents’ health, safety, welfare and rights.

Who is eligible: Warm-hearted individuals, someone with no conflicts of interest that has reliable transportation.

Age requirements: 18 and older.

Special skills or training: No prior experience is required. A free 36-hour certification training is provided, as well as on-site training within a three-month internship. Volunteer hours are flexible with ongoing support and continuing education.

When needed: Tax-free weekend in August to help with the school supplies drive at Walmart Southwest and Walmart North.

Who is eligible: All volunteers must be 18 or older, or be in an organized groupsuch as the Girl Scouts or a soccer team, with an adult sponsor on site at all times.

THE FAMILY SHELTER

FORT CONCHO NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK

Organization’s purpose: Take part in preserving our heritage by volunteering at one of the best-preserved frontier forts west of the Mississippi. Fort Concho National Historic Landmark serves over 60,000 guests each year with programs, activities, special events, toursand educational programs. We do this with the help of a loyal and talented volunteer corps that assists us throughout the year. Volunteers serve in various capacities, including living history, special events, docents, maintenance, archivesand collections. Training is provided by fort staff. The time commitment averages four to eight hours per month.

When needed: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and some evenings; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays and1-5 p.m. Sundays.

Who is eligible: All volunteers must complete a volunteer application.

Age requirements: 18 and older. Underage volunteers must have parent’s permission.

Special skills or training: No special skills other than an interest in history and its preservation and interpretation.

FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM OF THE CONCHO VALLEY

Organization’s purpose: The Foster Grandparent Program places people55 and olderin schools, Head Start, Early Head Start andafter-school programs to assist disadvantaged children and children with special needs develop physically, socially and academically. The service is provided at no cost to the school, but Foster Grandparents do receive a monetary stipend for each hour of service. This service also gives the Foster Grandparent the opportunity to be involved in meaningful service to others in the community.

When needed: 15-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday.

Who is eligible: Foster grandparents must pass a criminal background check and must have an annual income that does not exceed program requirements.

Age requirements: 55 and older.

Special skills or training: Foster grandparents receive 40 hours of training prior to placement at a site.

FRIENDS OF SAN ANGELO STATE PARK

Organization’s purpose: Friends of San Angelo State Park is a nonprofit membership volunteer organization supporting activities, programs and projects in the park.

When needed: Ongoing opportunities for volunteerism are trail work days and bird-feeding. Trail work days are usually the second Saturday of each month. Lunch is provided. Bird-feeding is done almost every morning at the Wildlife Viewing Blind. Volunteers are scheduled on a weekly or monthly basis. Events held throughout the year are planned and staffed by volunteers with coordination by the board of directors. Events include Silver Bluebonnet Picnic for senior citizens,Free Day in the park, summer outdoor activities for children, Monarch Trail Ride and Cowboy Weekend, fish fry for members and staff, Christmas in the Park. Who is eligible: Anyone is eligible for membership. The fee is $25 with senior and military discounts. Members and non-members participate in volunteer tasks. Background checks for anyone associated with youth activities.

Organization’s purpose: House of Faith is a grass-roots, faith-based, community-supported organization that provides freeafter-school and summer programs for children and youth in Tom Green County, with transportation provided. More than 2,100 studentsages 4-18 are registered with House of Faith. House of Faith staff and volunteers share a message of hope, giving students an opportunity to grow in discipleship and leadership. House of Faith programs are designed to fulfill the mission of “Taking Jesus to neighborhood children, youth and families.” Volunteers are greatly appreciated and essential to House of Faith programs.

Organization's purpose: Interim's Hospice and Palliative Care Program is a compassionate, patient-centered approach to medical care and support for people at end-of-life and their families. It is based on a philosophy of improving the quality of life when quantity of time is limited. Organization’s purpose:Kindred Hospice provides care for patients with life-limiting illnesses, allowing them to live as fully and comfortably as possible. Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team, which includes healthcare professionals and office support staff.Volunteers bless our patients and their families in a variety of ways.Kindred Hospice is a Level 3 partner with We Honor Veterans and strives to provide hospice care that supports veterans of the United States military. Patient care volunteers help the patient and their family like a supportive friend might, by visiting and listening. Volunteers can also deliver donated flowers to patients, read, play games, sit with a patient so family can run errands, assist with light household chores, and/or assist by sharing your unique interest or set of skills with patients. Veteran volunteers help our patients with military service in only the way a fellow veteran can.Vigil volunteers help patients and families as the time nears for God to call them home. Administrative volunteers help with filing, mailings and special projects in our office.

Organization’s purpose: Promises for Families is dedicated to providing academic tutoring, mentoring and summer camp experiences to children who have a parent incarcerated.

When needed: 4-6 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays for academic tutoring. Other times for special events such as the Healthy Families Children’s Fair. There are also opportunities for volunteers at our summer camps. We need art instructors, musicians, yoga teachers, a nurseand instructors for fishing, hiking and outdoor games.

SAN ANGELO VISITORCENTER

Organization’s purpose: The San Angelo Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), a division of the Chamber of Commerce, is a destination marketing organization. The CVB also manages the Visitor Center. The role of a volunteer is to greet and receive visitors when they come into the Visitor Center. They also must be able to direct the visitor to information available in the center, including maps and brochures about the city, the regionand the state.

When needed: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursdays; 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 1-5 p.m. Fridays; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays starting in June. In addition, noon-4 p.m. Sunday, May 27, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, May 28.

Requirements: Must complete a volunteer application. If selected, the individual will receive a handbook outlining their job responsibilities.

SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM OF THE CONCHO VALLEY

Organization’s purpose: The Senior Companion Program places people age 55 and older in the homes of elderly homebound people to provide them with companionship and to assist with minor household tasks in order to allow the homebound people the opportunity to stay living independently in their homes for as long as possible. The service is provided at no cost to the client, but senior companions do receive a monetary stipend for each hour of service. This service also gives the senior companion the opportunity to be involved in meaningful service to others in the community.

When needed: Senior companions serve 15-40 hours a week, Monday-Friday.

Who is eligible: Senior companions must pass a criminal background check and must have an annual income that does not exceed program requirements.

Age requirements: 55 and older.

Special skills or training needed: None. Senior companions receive 40 hours of training prior to placement with a client.

SHANNON VOLUNTEERS

Organization’s purpose: Shannon Volunteers (formerly the Shannon Auxiliary) was founded in 1975 to benefit Shannon Medical Center and the community. Hundreds of men and women have given their time and talent to the hospital since then. Shannon volunteers provide service and comfort to patients and their families and work to make each patient's stay a little easier. Volunteer opportunities include: greeting and providing directions to visitors and patients, delivering flowers and mail to patient rooms, staffing the gift shops, comforting families in ICU and same-day surgery waiting areas, visiting patients, supporting various Shannon departments, and driving the new Shannon Shuttle.

Who is eligible: All volunteers must complete a volunteer application, pass a background check and not use tobacco or nicotine products.

Age requirements: 18 and older.

Special skills or training: Volunteers are required to work a minimum of two four-hour shifts per month.

TOM GREEN COUNTY FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

Organization’s purpose: Tom Green County Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers who devote their time and efforts to raising funds for the Tom Green County Library System. Proceeds are used to strengthen the library collection and sponsor programs and activities that enhance use of the Library and encourage reading.

When needed: Mondays through Saturdays,9:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. most days, excluding Sunday, at Stephens Central Library. Volunteers can choose from a variety of shifts when working in the Book Store; however, sorting and boxing books can be done anytime during library hours. All volunteers are trained in their areas of interest.

Requirements:Dependable, honest, basic computer skills are necessary for helping with online sales. Putting books on tables, assisting customers, checking out customers, and some heavy lifting of boxes for those who are able – all are involved in preparing for and working the annual spring sale. Operation Paperback involves sorting, boxing and shipping boxes of books to military personnel overseas.

Organization’s purpose: To improve lives in the Concho Valley by providing funding support to local nonprofit programs that adhere to high standards of excellence. Types of volunteers needed include Loaned Executives to conduct workplace campaigns and Community Investment Panel members to read funding applications and make onsite visits to local programs requesting funding support.

When needed: Loaned executives are needed August-December. The days and hours are flexible and determined individually between the volunteer and United Way staff. Community Investment Panel members are needed October-February. The days and hours are flexible and determined individually between the volunteer and their panel chair. The average number of hours committed is no more than 15 hours annually.

Who is eligible: Anyone with a desire to assist United Way of the Concho Valley.

Organization's purpose:To feed the body, souland spirit of all who havea need in the San Angelo community. The program is solely run by volunteers. A nutritious meal is prepared six days a week, 11 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The meals consist of an entrée, vegetable, starch, soup, bread, dessert and beverages.Volunteers include local businesses, corporations, churches and military personnel.The various volunteer positions available are team leaders, kitchen support, cooks, dining room support, restroom monitors, and clothescloset support.Additional opportunities to serve might arise during the year when fundraising events are being planned.

When needed: About 9 a.m.-1 p.m.Monday-Saturday.

When needed: Because RSVP works with many agencies, the window of service is designed to meet the volunteer’s schedule.Most volunteers are needed 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, but there are some volunteer opportunities for service after 5 p.m. and on weekends.

Requirements:Anyone 55 and older is eligible to volunteer and receive benefits through RSVP.Benefits include a supplemental accident and liability insurance at no cost when volunteering service is occurring, a bi-monthly newsletter, annual recognition and information on senior travel.
