The Mistress of Mayhem has had numerous looks over the years. She has progressed from a harlequin bodysuit to a long-sleeve shirt with short shorts and pigtails with dozens of looks in between. Her outfits tend to be very playful in a traditional black and red color scheme. Yet every now and again, Harley comes out in one-time-use outfits that are striking or awful. Her newest is definitely one of her most unique.

Batman/Catwoman #5 - created by Tom King, Clay Mann, and Tomeu Morey - fromDC's Black Label shows off her new look from different angles. She is keeping to her traditional black and red and for the most part not a lot changes. She wears a red, sleeveless leotard over form-fitted black pants with traditional diamond accents. Harley is also still in her jester cap. However, her mask - which is usually black - is now red andHarley wears a secondary mask over it. This top layered mask is really what defines this outfit and makes it creepy.

Harley's new mask is very similar to drama masks - particularly Japanese Noh drama style masks.Harley's mask, unlike the traditional Fukai mask used to depict middle-aged women with lots of life experience, is much more cartoonish and even Joker-like. It has an exaggerated broad smile, wide and highlyarced eyes, and rosy cheeksdirectly underthe eyes. This is a considerably different look for Harley as the only mask she wears tends to be her domino mask. For the past several years she has been foregoing this accessory, but even though this comic brings it back and even changes the color, it isn't really even utilized well.

The change in mask could be a reflection of Harley's life. Early in her career, shewas defined by her association with Joker. While he doesn't usually wear a physical mask, they are both very dramatic with high levels of showmanship. When Harley finally splits off on her own, she is depicted without a mask at all. Her face is completely open and visible.Harley is unapologetically herself and is the freest that she has ever been. Now, following the death of the Joker, she is back to hiding her face, except she has taken it to another level. Instead of simply bordering her eyes, she has completely hidden her face and placed a fraudulent smile over it. This issue shows her in a heightened level of stress and frustration as she lost her opportunity to 100% free herself from the Joker though one can't help but wonder if she would have actually been able to do it.

Regardless ofHarley's reasoning for the mask, it is certainlyoff-putting. It highly resembles a face that a porcelain doll would have - the variety that would be included in a horror film. This is the exact mask that adds a creep factor when seen in action, though here it doesn't hit as strongly as it could. Nonetheless, this look is unique from previous ones and the mask is creepier than anything she has worn before, making this the creepiest costume Harley Quinn owns.
