If your air conditioning unit has stopped working, many possible reasons can explain why. It could be your thermostat, your air filter, a problem with the condenser or compressor, or it may just be time to replace the unit, especially if it's over 10 years old.

Make sure the outside unit is turned on (there's probably a switch near the unit). If the outside unit has a separate circuit breaker, check your circuit box and make sure it hasn't been tripped. A more serious issue if the outside air conditioning unit's not working is a broken compressor, capacitor or fan.

Common Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner is Not Turning On

Resetting your thermostat is often all that's necessary to get it working again. A tripped circuit breaker is another common reason why your AC won't turn on. Using too many appliances at once can trip the circuit breaker.

Dead or weak batteries are one of the most common reasons for remote control failure. Replace the batteries with new ones, ensuring they are correctly installed with the right polarity. Sometimes, even batteries that appear to have charge left can be too weak to send a strong signal to your mini split unit.

If your AC unit has a reset button on the condenser unit, you simply press it and hope that the problem resolves. Look for it first around on the exterior of your machine, especially along the bottom edge near the ground. An AC's reset button is typically red and visible, so it should be easy to spot.

How often should ductless AC be serviced? ›

Due to their ductless design, mini-split systems often require more frequent filter cleanings than ducted systems. Even though normal mini-split maintenance is only recommended once every six to twelve months, you should have the filter replaced every month.

Don't skip it: ductless fans can't handle accumulating debris, and if you ignore maintenance and professional cleaning is required, you'll spend hundreds of dollars and possibly shorten the life of your system. Many homeowners are hesitant to install ductless because the units aren't necessarily design-friendly.

Mini split air conditioners are also designed to run for longer periods of time than most other air conditioners. They can moderate temperature, so there isn't much worry they'll create inconsistent temperatures by running all of the time, or any very cold spots right near them.

Check Your Power. If the compressor is not working in your AC unit it could be because it has no power. Check your fuse box to see if a fuse is blown or if the breaker has been tripped. Most fuse boxes have tags that tell you what fuse or breaker delivers power to your AC unit.
